Why this matters now

A new EU law is changing how companies report their environmental impact

The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, CSRD, is the most significant expansion of corporate reporting obligations in EU history. It requires large companies to publicly disclose detailed, audited information about greenhouse gas emissions, energy use, climate risks, and decarbonisation plans.

Unlike voluntary ESG frameworks of the past, CSRD is a legal requirement. Non-compliance exposes companies to regulatory penalties, loss of investor confidence, and reputational damage. Reports must be verified by an external auditor with the same rigour as financial accounts.

The core of CSRD climate reporting is ESRS E1, the European Sustainability Reporting Standard for Climate Change. It requires disclosure across nine structured areas, from transition plans and emissions targets to Scope 1 2 3 emissions and climate-related financial risks.

For most companies, this is the first time they have ever had to measure and publish these numbers. The challenge is knowing exactly what data to collect, how to calculate it correctly, and how to present it in a format an auditor can stand behind.

Are you in scope?

CSRD applies to your company if you meet any of these criteria

The first wave of companies began reporting in 2025. If you are not yet compliant, the window to act is narrowing.

Large EU-based companies

Companies incorporated in the EU with more than 250 employees, more than €40 million in annual revenue, or more than €20 million in total assets. You only need to meet two of the three criteria.

EU-listed companies

All companies listed on EU-regulated markets, including small and medium-sized listed companies with some transitional relief until 2026.

Non-EU companies operating in Europe

Companies headquartered outside the EU that generate more than €150 million in annual EU turnover and have at least one subsidiary or branch in the EU.

Not sure if you are in scope? Most companies with more than 250 employees operating in the EU are. If you supply to large EU companies, your customers will soon be asking for your emissions data anyway.

ESRS E1 - what you must disclose

9 things your CSRD climate report must contain

ESRS E1 is the climate standard within CSRD. It has nine structured disclosure requirements. EmissionOwl guides you through every one.

Your strategy for aligning the business with a 1.5°C pathway and achieving climate neutrality by 2050.

The policies adopted to manage climate-related risks and opportunities across mitigation and adaptation.

Concrete measures, such as energy efficiency, renewable energy, fuel switching, and the CapEx and OpEx allocated to them.

Quantified GHG reduction targets with a base year, target year, interim milestones, and coverage across Scope 1, 2 and 3.

Total energy consumption in MWh, broken down by renewable and non-renewable sources, plus an energy intensity ratio.

Your full carbon footprint in tCO2e, including Scope 1, Scope 2 location-based and market-based methods, and material Scope 3 categories.

Carbon credits and removal projects disclosed separately from gross emissions, without netting against Scope 1, 2 or 3 figures.

The internal carbon price per tCO2e, where used, and how it influences capital allocation.

Financial impact of physical climate risks and transition risks on your business over the short, medium and long term.

Some disclosures can be deferred in your first reporting year. EmissionOwl identifies which apply and flags phase-in provisions.
